Description
Girl with a BabyBeechey's portrait of Bourgeois (DPG17) was painted on the verso of this panel, apparently in order to preserve it. The painting is, nevertheless, in ruinous condition.
Its spatial construction
embers smoulder on the floor
By the time that the market for his works peaked
and the signature was discovered during cleaning in 1946
and the river is the Scheldt
These are severely abraded and had previously been repainted (possibly by Bourgeois) with a continuation of the landscape
probably of the late 1640s
The composition seems to be based partly on Annibale's etching of the Christ of Caprarola
around 1714-16
There is no procession of angels striding up and down
an obscured window on the left is the source of the light which falls on the drums
survives in the Royal Armouries at Madrid
