Portrait of a Man

Portrait of a ManHanneman was trained in The Hague with the portrait painter Anthonie van Ravesteyn the younger. Between 1626 and 1638 He was in London, where he was influenced by Van Dyck and possibly employed in his studio. In 1640 he became a member of the painters' guild in The Hague, where he enjoyed a successful career as a portrait painter. This is possibly the pendant to a female portrait now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

The costume suggests that the sitter is Dutch

"Horatius Cocles defending the Bridge" was painted under Poussin's influence early during Le Brun's stay in Rome

the dagger in her right hand ready to slay

in her magical palace and enchanted gardens

or in Benjamin Wilson's so-called 'Peg Woffington' in the Garrick Club

The painting was probably cut down around 1764 in France

Charles Small Pybus (1766-1810) was MP for Dover from 1790 and Lord of the Admiralty 1791-7 and of the Treasury 1797-1803

The inscription is a false signature (apparently added by the artist) referring to Jean-Alexis Grimou (1678-1733)
