A Dutch Gentleman
The genre originates with Dutch and Flemish painters
the girls name I think was Katherine but am not sure
although it is now believed to be closer to Knapton's style
The view is thought to be taken from the Grebbeberg
The picture remained in Reynolds's possession and was acquired by Bourgeois at the Reynolds studio sale of 1796
probably a preparatory sketch for a large altarpiece
built for the widow of the Stadtholder
which tells how Jacob tricked his dying father
He was a friend of Gainsborough who exhibited this portrait at the Royal Acadamy in 1778
The so-called 'sportsman' in this painting seems a little young
Attributed to Poelenburch until 1880
although here the Madonna is borne up by clouds
