​เจมส์ เฮิร์ดฟิลด์ ถือได้ว่าเป็นศิลปินที่มีชื่อเสียงที่สุดคนหนึ่งในวางการร็อคและเมทัล เป็นทั้งผู้ก่อตั้ง นักประพันธ์เพลง นักร้อง และ มือกีต้าร์ให้กับวงเมทัลลิก้า โดยกีต้ารที่เจมส์ใช้คือ Gibson Flying V โดยได้ใช้จนกระทั้งปี 1984 หลังจากนั้นเจมส์ได้หันมาใช้กีต้าร์ Gibson Explorer โดยปิ๊กอัพส่วนใหญ่ที่ใช้จะเป็นปิ๊กอัพ EMG รุ่น 81 ในตำแหน่งบริดจ์ และ EMG รุ่น 60 ในตำแหน่งใกล้คอ แต่เมื่อไม่นานมานี้เจมส์ได้ร่วมมือกับผู้ก่อตั้งบริษัท EMG ร็อบ เทอรเนอร์ในการพัฒนาปิ๊กอัพ EMG รุ่น JH Set ของตัวเองขึ้นมา
