An inscribed lace bobbin- William Walin Stokeline 1839A spirally inscribed bone lace bobbin 'William Walin Stokeline 1839' Stokeline ( now spelt Stoke Lyne ) is a village near Bicester in Oxfordshire England. The bobbin is in excellent condition and has its original spangle. NB. Lace making was a cottage industry using domestic animal bone and local soft woods not ivory. Stock no. JP25
The hexagonal barrel is engraved with spots and lines and the end is a waffle patterned silver seal
The image is taken from a known print of the later house circa 1840
The poem was written in 1845 and is about an Irishman preparing to leave for America for a new life but regretting what he had lost
The salmon pink ribbon is a replacement but with printed numbers ( please see photos )
In excellent condition- no damage or repair and just light tarnish to the steel blades
The blade is hallmarked for Sheffield 1843 maker AH (Aaron Hadfield) The fork is hall marked with the same details except the date letter is the next year's 1844
The inside is lined in a patterned paper and toning silk
There are no contents
