Antique Cased Solid Silver Victorian Napkin Ring - Maker William M HayesA delightful sterling silver cased Victorian napkin ring crafted by William M Hayes in 1889. This antique was assayed* (tested for silver purity*) at Birmingham Assay Office in the same year. The napkin ring is inscribed DORIS MARY BURT in a shield shaped cartouche. The shield shape represents the desire to protect. The underside of the napkin ring is inscribed: Birthday gift from Father & Mother Aug 2nd 1902 The original case is also in super

So this means that this case can accommodate modern cigarettes too as well as bank notes

The whole compact is in super condition

This city is famous as a center of jewellery making - so much so that it was known colloquially as Goldstadt ('Golden City')

The brass lid shows exactly the same design as the powder compact & both have the most glorious deep golden patina

The original unused sifter is in place

The mirror is excellent & gives a clear accurate reflection

The base is decorated with a guilloche design

especially those who adore Art Nouveau but nothing had prepared us for this case which was crafted in the 1800s
